Introduction
This policy explains how Plant Identifier ("we," "our," or "us") handles information when you use the Plant Identifier mobile application (the "App") or this website. The App does not require you to create an account with us.
Information We Collect
Information You Provide
- Plant photos you choose or take for identification and plant-health guidance
- Questions you send to the in-app plant guide and the resulting chat history
- Saved plant records, care reminders, diagnoses, and optional collection details
- Feature requests, feedback, and communications you choose to send
Automatically Collected Information
- App interactions and technical information used for analytics, reliability, and paywall performance
- Request metadata such as time, model, token counts, response status, approximate cost, and IP address when an AI request passes through our secure relay; the relay does not store the request photo, prompt, or AI response in its request log
- An Apple DeviceCheck token used for anti-abuse verification when supported
- Website visit information collected through Vercel Analytics
Optional Location
If you grant location permission, the App can save coordinates with a plant record so you can remember where it was found. The App does not need location for identification, and you can deny or revoke permission in iOS Settings.
How We Use Your Information
We use the collected information for the following purposes:
- To return a possible plant match, care information, plant-health guidance, and answers to your plant questions
- To save your collection, chat history, preferences, and reminders
- To process purchases, determine access, and present paywalls
- To measure feature use, diagnose failures, prevent abuse, and improve the App
- To respond to feedback, feature requests, and support messages
- To comply with legal obligations
Where Information Is Processed
We do not sell your personal information. We disclose information only as needed to operate the App:
- AI processing: Plant photos, plant context, and questions are sent through our developer-operated relay to Anthropic so its Claude service can generate the requested result. Do not submit photos or text containing information you do not want processed by these services.
- Apple: SwiftData records can sync through your private iCloud database when iCloud is available. Apple also processes App Store purchases, subscriptions, notifications, DeviceCheck, and any diagnostics you choose to share with developers.
- Aptabase: We send app-usage events and limited event properties, such as the feature used and a returned plant name, for product analytics. We do not send plant photos or precise coordinates to Aptabase.
- Superwall: We use Superwall to present paywalls and understand subscription access and paywall interactions. Apple remains the payment processor.
- FeaturePortal: Feature requests and related product-feedback activity are processed by FeaturePortal when you use those features.
- Vercel: Our secure AI relay and website run on Vercel infrastructure, which processes network and operational data needed to deliver those services.
- Legal or safety reasons: We may disclose information when required by law or when reasonably necessary to protect users, the service, or our rights.
Data Security
Network requests use encrypted HTTPS connections. Access to the AI relay is restricted with an app-specific key, rate limits, and supported-device anti-abuse checks. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Data Retention
- Saved plants, photos, diagnoses, and chat history remain in the App and, when enabled, your private iCloud database until you delete them or remove the App data.
- Our AI relay does not store the contents of your photo, prompt, or response in its request log. It retains operational request metadata for security, usage accounting, and reliability.
- AI, analytics, paywall, feedback, Apple, and hosting providers retain information under their own terms and legal obligations.
- Support communications are kept only as long as reasonably necessary to answer your request and maintain appropriate records.
Your Privacy Rights
Depending on your location, you may have the following rights:
- Right to access your personal information
- Right to correct inaccurate information
- Right to delete your personal information
- Right to restrict processing of your information
- Right to data portability
- Right to object to certain types of processing
You can delete individual saved records in the App. Because synced records are stored in your private iCloud database, you can also manage iCloud data through your Apple account. Requests sent to a third-party provider may also be subject to that provider's privacy process.

Children's Privacy
Our app is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that we have collected personal information from a child under 13 without parental consent, we will take steps to remove that information from our servers.
Location Data
The App requests location only when you use a location-enabled collection feature. Coordinates are stored with the relevant plant record locally and may sync to your private iCloud database. Exact coordinates are not included in Aptabase analytics. You can disable location access at any time through iOS Settings.
Third-Party Services
The App relies on services operated by other companies. Their handling of information is governed by their policies:
International Data Transfers
Your information may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your own. We ensure that such transfers comply with applicable data protection laws and that appropriate safeguards are in place to protect your information.

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new privacy policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date. You are advised to review this privacy policy periodically for any changes.
